TERRORVISION

Late night video shop

Late night video shop 📼

Back in the day i would stay up late into the night working, i’d turn out all the lights in the studio and put on an 80’s horror film ive seen before so i could half watch and still get work done. I find most 80’s horror like that; nothing much happens for the first hour, then absolute mayhem for the last 20 mins. These were some of the best nights of my life, so i would love to share that with you lot.

The Last Starfighter.

This is a great film, great special effects, fun and mental. Some kid who’s good at computer games gets drafted to fight against some dick aliens- turns out the arcade machine he liked was a training program or summit and he kicked ass at it. Love it.

Chopping Mall

A Shopping Mall (a place where humans gathered to loiter and consume) hires a bunch of robots as security guards. The robots go ape-shit and start killing people. I suspect the robots were sick of it, bloody humans and their milkshakes buying shoes n shit.

Neon Maniacs.

In the olde days of video shops the cover did all the work. You wouldnt read about a film, no one would tell you about films, no one even knew if films were good or not back then. Pick a weird cover with a weird name and thats yr lot. Bring back the good ol days eh.

The Gate

I love this film with all my heart. Its scary, sad, funny and totally relatable if you were ever a weirdo kid that didnt fit in. 2 kids open a portal to hell in their back garden accidentally and have to fight them with love and rockets.

The Thing.

Possibly the best film ever made.

Some dog screws up some important research by vomiting up an alien he’d eaten. Then some drunk helicopter pilot with amazing fashion sense tries to fix everything with some wire and a lighter.

Basket Case

Bloke carries a wicker basket around New York. Inside is his angry mutant twin brother who keeps murdering people. Cheap, grubby and completely bonkers. Exactly the sort of film that made wandering around old video shops feel like an adventure.

The Video Dead.

A zombie film where the zombies come out of a television. That’s already enough for me. It’s daft, creepy, and full of weird ideas that somehow work. Proper video shop nonsense from the days when a cool VHS cover was all you needed to take a gamble. I miss that.

Class Of Nuke Em High.

Classic. School built next to a toxic chemical plant makes the students insane. It was always like this growing up in the 80s. For instance where i grew up the factory down the road was fined for having the worst pollution in the E.U. But luckily i turned out fine.

Day Of The Dead

I love how dire this movie is, its bad and things get worse, no let up. Films like this made me wonder why people wanted to feel this way, this hopeless indiference what we call living and the inevitable death that is inescapable. Now i love that shit.

Ghosts of Mars

A john carpenter movie. I dont think it did well on its release- i dont honestly know, but i can say it is a great comfort film for me. Slap it on and watch jason statham with hair fight zombies….on mars!

From Beyond

A lovecraft story if i remember rightly. This is a corker of a movie. A mad scientist opens a doorway to another dimension and all hell kicks off. Amazing special effects, creepy, weird, gross and utterly brilliant. 10/10 hotdogs for this one.

I really hope you guys enjoy this- i’d love to keep updating it

House.

Ive watched this film numerous times and im still unsure whats going on. Some vietnam soldier has some ptsd and some monsters. It was one of those videos on the shelves that youd stare at the cover for hours.

They Live

Relevant today as it was then. This dude puts on these shades and sees the world has been invaded by these weirdo sickos who just want us to behave like cattle and consume, worship money and never question authority. And a great fight scene.

Terrovison

One of my personal all time favs and even more poignant today than ever. A family set up a satellite dish to watch more tv channels. After getting drunk and hitting it with a hammer it accidentally beems a killer alien into their house. It used to happen a lot in those days.

Dreamscape

Last time i watched this was when i was around 20, i was in uni and it was scorching hot day. Me and robby found a vhs copy at a market and watched it in the afternoon, drawing the curtains, sat in the dark. Great times.

The Blob

Another absolute banger- action starts early. A fecking alien sucks people inside out and we get to see everything. Cool dude on a motorbike saves the day. Chilling ending. You’ll love this.

The Stuff

A company finds some stuff oozing out of the ground and decide to sell it as food. But the stuff is alive and fucks everyone up. This is a bonkers film, like absolutely nuts.

Monster Squad

Around the time of goonies we had all these films about groups of kids wandering around finding dead bodies, pirate ships, aliens in sheds etc. this film is about a group of kids who hang out with all the universal monsters. “The wolfmans got nards”.

Paper House

Last saw this 40 years ago so give me slack. From what i remember , extremely atmospheric, dark and creepy. It really fucked with my head as a kid; i was very ill as a child and i used to have these horrific vivid nightmares so it stuck with me that someone else knew how i saw the world.

Saturn 3

Watched it as a kid, great film, for back then. From what i remember its a huge scary robot being huge and scary on a spaceship. The creator of the huge scary robot may be insane and trying to kill everyone.

Re-animator.

Another absolute banger. Weird vibes abound. A mad doctor becomes obsessed with death and decided to have a go at fixing it.

Cracking music.
